Some Chatsworth tuck shops accused of selling booze to minors

The chair of the Bayville Community Forum says eThekwini metro police and the SAPS are aware of complaints that some tuck shops in Chatsworth are selling booze to minors. 

Pillay says law enforcement has also discovered that a cough mixture is also being sold to kids.

“They are selling (the cough mixture), and anyone can buy it, and the kids put it in (cool drink) or in juice, and they have sips of it, and it gives them a high.”

Pillay says his team is doing all it can to find the culprits.

“We have regular checks between metro police and SAPS because for anyone to trade in alcohol sales, you need to have a liquor licence, and for the best of our knowledge, the only places with a liquor licence are the bottle stores and taverns.

“Tuck shops would not have a licence. They operate with a business licence from eThekwini. We did a joint operation with eThekwini Municipality Businesses Licensing Unit for them to intervene because then it becomes a violation of by-laws and the business licence.”

No arrest has been made.
